Simon Bai appointed to fill Mukilteo School Board vacancy

MUKILTEO, Wash., March 6, 2023—Today, the Mukilteo School District Board unanimously approves Mukilteo DEI Vice Chair and SVP and Chief Financial Officer of UniBank, Simon Bai, to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Director Michael Simmons.

“I’m very honored to be selected to the Mukilteo School Board,” Bai told the Lynnwood Times. “I have big shoes to fill. Mr. Simmons has done a wonderful job over his long tenure at the board. I hope to continue his legacy of “starting and ending with the students,” and also bring my own unique experiences and skill set. I look forward to working with the other board members, Superintendent Dr. Brynelson and the district staff.”

According to a press release from Mukilteo schools, nine people met the criteria for the District 1 director position. After reviewing the resumes and letter of interest of the eligible applicants, the School Board selected five candidates who were interviewed at Monday’s public meeting.

After the interviews, the board recessed to an executive session to discuss the candidates’ qualifications. The board returned to the public meeting and voted unanimously to appoint Simon Bai to fill the District 1 position.

Bai’s term will continue through the November 2023 election—the remainder of Simmons’ term. Simon Bai has until May 19 to run for the General Election for Mukilteo School Board along with any other candidates who meet the criteria for the District 1 position.

After serving more than 11 years on the Mukilteo School District Board of Directors, Director Simmons announced his resignation during the board’s February 13 meeting. He planned to continue as a director until the board finds a replacement, but not later than Monday, March 27.

Director Michael Simmons shared in his resignation letter, “The time commitment of a board member is without question a key piece of serving, and I have always been all-in … However, as I wind toward the next phase of my professional working career, and with serious consideration of other personal matters, I am unable to continue at the pace that I feel is warranted to be an effective school board member.”
