Eighth child injured by window fall in Snohomish County this year

LYNNWOODโ€”South County Fire firefighters responded to a critically injured 5-year-old boy who fell from a third-story window at a home in Lynnwood this past Sunday evening. The child is the eighth reported window fall in Snohomish County this year.

Firefighters found the child after he had fallen through a window onto the concrete below. He was transported to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett before being transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for specialized care.

“We are seeing more severe injuries than in previous years because many of these falls are occurring in newer single-family homes and townhomes, where children’s bedrooms are often located on the third story,” said Shawneri Guzman, Community Outreach Manager for South County Fire and coordinator for Safe Kids Snohomish County.

As of July 1, Snohomish County is on pace to exceed the 12 reported child window falls recorded in 2025. The weeks surrounding the Fourth of July are historically one of the busiest times for child window falls as families gather, temperatures rise, and windows are opened to cool homes. A window screen may keep insects out, but it will not prevent a child from falling.

Parents and caregivers can help prevent these tragedies by:

  • Installing window stops that prevent windows from opening more than 4 inches.
  • Keeping furniture, beds, and climbable objects away from windows.
  • Supervising young children around open windows.
  • Talking with older children about the dangers of pressing on screens and falling from windows.

South County Fire and Safe Kids Snohomish County offer free window locks to families while supplies last. Learn more and request free window safety devices at www.southsnofire.org/PreventWindowFalls.
