Mukilteo Police to host gun buyback event on February 2

MUKILTEO—The Mukilteo Police Department is hosting a Gun Buyback event on February 2, 2024, where Mukilteo and Snohomish County residents can exchange unwanted firearms for pre-paid Visa Gift Cards and enter into a raffle for the chance to win a $500 pre-paid gift card.

Participants will be given one raffle ticket per qualifying firearm and a winner will be selected after the conclusion of the event.  The event is part of ongoing efforts to reduce gun violence and unwanted firearms in our community and is run in partnership with the Children’s Wellness Coalition-Suicide Prevention Taskforce “You Are Not Alone” event that is being held on February 3, 2024, at the Rosehill Community Center. No registration is required, but participants must provide proof of residency in Mukilteo or Snohomish County to receive a gift card.  The Mukilteo Police Department will not be recording names or doing records checks on anyone participating in the event. 

Firearms exchanged through this program that are not stolen or linked to other crimes will be melted down as part of the Mukilteo Police Department’s annual firearm destruction process.

The Mukilteo Gun Buyback was approved by Mukilteo City Council as part of the annual budget. The program aims to reduce gun violence within the community and to reduce the likelihood of accidental injuries and suicides by firearms by providing residents an opportunity to voluntarily relinquish ownership of unwanted firearms in exchange for pre-paid gift cards.

How to participate in “Gun Buyback”

Participants are asked to bring unloaded guns they wish to trade in for pre-paid Visa gift cards by following these instructions:

  1. Arrive at the Mukilteo Police Department in your vehicle at the lower parking lot between the Mukilteo Police Station and Mukilteo Fire Department Station 25.
  1. Remain in your vehicle and await instruction from Mukilteo PD Staff. A Mukilteo PD Staff member will come out to your vehicle and provide you with further instructions.
  2. Gun(s) must be unloaded
  3. Gun(s) must be in the trunk or backseat of your vehicle, or otherwise out of reach

Gift card amounts

Gift Cards will be handed out as follows (Limit of 3 gift cards per participant):

  • $150 for Handguns
  • $150 for Centerfire Rifles or Semi-automatic Shotguns
  • $100 for Pump-action Shotguns
  • $50 for Rimfire Rifles
  • $50 for Single Shot Shotguns

Raffle

Participants will receive one raffle ticket for each qualifying firearm (Handguns, Centerfire rifles, Semi-automatic shotguns and pump-action shotguns) along with their gift card.  A raffle winner will be selected at the end of the event and has 24 hours to collect the $500 gift card.  If the person does not collect the $500 gift card, another person will be selected until the gift card is given out.
