Letter-to-Editor: Climate change and its impacts on local wildlife & ecosystems

Do you know humans are expediting Climate Change? But we can fix it. Climate Change is a change in the earth’s atmosphere due to rising levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. When I think of climate change, polar bears come to my mind. Climate Change is the biggest reason why polar bears are endangered. It also has tremendous impact on local ecosystems and causes wildlife to lose their habitats and disrupt the timing of seasonal events. The loss of ecosystems affects humans directly.

I am an eighth grader and I have been experiencing the impacts of climate change yearly. The decreasing amounts of snow every year, smoke from fires, air quality, deforestation, and more. The smoke from the fires affects our health and kill people.

Simple things can preserve our planet. One easy way you can help slow down global warming is by cutting down on food waste, buying what you need, and turning off lights and electronics when not needed. You can also use public transport and try to carpool. An obvious way you can stop climate change that people often underestimate is speaking up. You need to push government officials to pass laws that preserve our world.

Now that you are aware of the steps of climate change, you can’t just sit idle. You must act to give the inarguably best gift to the next generation.

Sincerely,

Nimalan Venkatesan, (8th grade)
