Controversial Republican figure Loren Culp may be expelled from WASPC

LACEY, Wash., April 4, 2024—The Washington Association of Sheriffs & Police Chiefs (WASPC) sent a letter to failed 2020 Washington state Republican gubernatorial and 2022 Congressional candidate, Loren Culp, proposing to expel him from his WASPC membership after making a series of offensive social media posts. WASPC membership is not a requirement to licensure of law enforcement officers.

“These comments made in public are unbecoming of a WASPC member and warrant expulsion,” the WASP wrote to Culp April 3, in a letter signed by WASPC President Kevin Morris and WASPC Executive Director Steve Strachan.

Letter of proposed expulsion from the WASPC to Loren Culp.

The two posts from March of 2024 Culp made, cited in the letter by WASPC, were posted on X in which the active social media Republican responded to an announcement made by State Representative Jacqueline Maycumber that she intends to run for Congresswoman’s Cathy McMorris Rodgers seat who is not seeking re-election. In the tweets, Culp calls the three-term Republican representative a “backstabbing b*tch,” and then responded to another Washington State elected official’s post, Representative Travis Couture, stating “there aren’t just female b*tches, Travis Couture is also a b*tch.”

Loren Culp’s X page has nearly 40 thousand followers and is an ardent supporter of current Republican gubernatorial candidate Semi Bird and a staunch critic of fellow 2024 gubernatorial candidates David Reichert (R) and Bob Ferguson (D). In his X profile, Culp states that he is Chief Deputy for Constitutional Sheriff Bob Songer of Klickitat County. According to county records, Culp is the a current Klickitat County’s Chief Jail Deputy.

Per WASPC’s Bylaws, Article IV Section H, a member may be expelled by a vote of at least eight board members. Before such a vote, the member to be expelled must be provided a 20-day notice of the proposed expulsion and an opportunity to respond.

Below is an except from the WASPC Bylaws Article IV Section H: “Disciplinary Proceedings. If, in a written and signed communication to the Executive Board, a member of the Association is charged with conduct detrimental to the objectives or interests of the Association or conduct in violation of the Association’s constitution, by-laws, code of ethics, rules and regulations, the Executive Board shall consider the matter, and if it shall decide to take further action, the presiding officer shall send a copy of the charges to the accused member, who shall be given twenty (20) days from the date of the receipt to reply, whereupon the Executive Board may take such further action as it may deem proper; provided, that suspension or expulsion of a member may be effected only under section H of this Article.

Culp’s took to X the evening of April 3, 2024, alleging a conspiracy by WASPC President, Sheriff Kevin Morris, to remove him because he “goes against THEIR endorsed candidate.” Sheriff Morris has endorsed Republican gubernatorial candidate Dave Reichert, according to Reichert’s campaign website.

Culp then continued to rant in his post, not holding back words, again referring to Representatives Couture and Maycumber as “bitches.”

He asked the public for help in what to do, “Tell them [WASPC] to pound sand and quit acting like little bitches[?]” It’s currently unclear if Culp has sent an official response to the WASPC yet.

That post has nearly 72 thousand comments, at the publishing of this article, including one from an Anthony Mixer, Chair of the Government Affairs Committee, who wrote:

“Honestly, I’m glad the organization is considering expelling you, Loren. Your behavior lately is unbecoming of a former gubernatorial candidate and police officer. The organization should not have cancer like yourself associated with them. Good riddance.”

Culp has also taken social media to bash and mock Emmy award-winning journalist and now host of unDivided, Brandi Kruse, for her support of gubernatorial candidate Dave Reichert and not his preferred candidate, Semi Bird.

Loren Culp ran in the 2022 elections to represent Washington’s 4th Congressional District as a Republican and lost in the Primary on August 2 against Republican Dan Newhouse by about 5,000 votes. In 2020 Culp ran for Washington State Governor against Jay Inslee and lost 43.1% to Inslee’s 56.6%.

On December 4, 2020, Culp alleged that 886,161 votes cast in the 2020 gubernatorial election appear to be from voters not registered in the Washington state’s voter registration database, which cost him the win in the 2020 gubernatorial election. Several days later he sued then-Washington Secretary of State Kim Wyman, alleging “intolerable voting anomalies.”  In January of 2021, Culp then withdrew his lawsuit against Secretary of State Wyman and several county auditors demanding an audit of Washington’s 2020 General Election.

Then-Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson, critical of Culp, chastised the Culp campaign on X for engaging in “false and irresponsible attacks on our democracy.”

“Like President Trump, Culp used a baseless lawsuit to undermine confidence in our elections,” said Ferguson in a tweet on January 15, 2021. “This past week shows how dangerous these false and irresponsible attacks on our democracy can be. After we threatened sanctions, Culp backed down and withdrew his lawsuit.”

The WASPC Board will meet later in April to decide how to move forward with Culp’s membership. The Lynnwood Times reached out to the WASPC, who confirmed the authenticity of the letter of expulsion to Culp but declined to comment.

  1. Culp is an unelectable loose Canon. His conduct is embarrassing not just to WASPC but to all present and retired law enforcement officers. He should first be publicly censured and then expelled from WASPC.

  2. Culp in his conversations touts being a Police Chief, self appointed being the only paid police officer in tiny Republic ,WA a One Man Police Department. Than said he was Chief Deputy when in fact he baby sits the County Jail as a jailer. He Ego is a joke !
