Expedia cuts 58 six-figure Seattle jobs targeting data scientists and finance staff

SEATTLE Expedia Group is permanently cutting 58 jobs at its Interbay headquarters in Seattle, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) received by the Washington Employment Security Department on Tuesday, September 22. The separations are scheduled between Nov. 21 and Dec. 1.

The jobs in the layoff notice are well-paid Seattle tech and corporate jobs. Roughly a third of the listed layoffs are data scientists — Data Scientist II and III posts in analytics, marketing testing, lodge offerings, payments, loyalty, sponsored listings and booking experiences, plus senior data-science and machine-learning scientist roles and two directors of data-science analytics.

Finance is the other large cluster: multiple finance managers and senior finance analysts, a senior finance manager, tax directors, a treasury manager, a vice president of finance, and related audit and compliance jobs.

Engineering jobs include software development engineers at levels II and III, senior software development engineers, a senior manager of software development engineering, and a principal architect. The list also includes a senior vice president for book-to-trip, a vice president of operations and services, program managers, and sourcing and risk-and-compliance managers.

Public compensation data for Expedia in the Greater Seattle area puts Data Scientist II total pay near the mid-$160,000s, Data Scientist III near $200,000, and senior data scientists and machine-learning scientists commonly in the $200,000-to-$230,000 range. Senior software development engineers often land between $220,000 and $290,000 in total compensation. Finance managers and senior analysts typically sit lower on the cash-plus-equity scale, often in the $120,000-to-$180,000 band, while directors and vice presidents can reach $250,000 to $500,000-plus depending on scope and equity.

Weighted across the 58 job titles, a reasonable estimate is a median total compensation of about $160,000 to $200,000 and an average of about $180,000 to $240,000 — still far above the Seattle metro all-occupations mean of roughly $92,000 and King County’s higher payroll averages.

Expedia has described earlier 2026 cuts as a bid to simplify structure, drop organizational layers, and match skills to what it needs next.

In January the company told the state it would eliminate 162 Washington jobs in April, including software engineers, product managers and data engineers, and a spokesperson said it was “eliminating roles as well as opening some new roles.” A midyear round was reported at about 400 jobs companywide.

Expedia is a large online travel company with full-year 2025 revenue at $14.73 billion, up 8%, with net income attributable to the company of $1.29 billion. Trailing-twelve-month figures into 2026 show revenue near $15.7 billion and net income around $2.0 billion. Gross bookings were reported at about $120 billion in 2025.

The 58 jobs is a smaller notice than Oracle’s 359-person Washington filing days earlier, but the mix is the same story: experienced, expensive specialists in a city that has seen repeated high-paid tech cuts. So far September’s WARN activity already captured Amazon, Qualtrics and other employers shedding engineers, scientists and managers. Expedia’s latest list simply adds another chapter at one of Seattle’s homegrown tech names.
