EVERETT, Wash., May 25, 2023—The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit (SIU) detectives are investigating young children being exposed to fentanyl in a South Everett hotel room.
On May 23, around 2:45 p.m., deputies responded to a South County Fire assist at Holiday Inn Express located in the 130 Block of 128th Street SW with an unresponsive baby. The parents initially told medical personnel the 11-month-old baby may have been exposed to cleaning chemicals they used in the hotel room; however, the baby was unresponsive to appropriate medical treatment for chemical exposure.
Medics then administered Narcan to the child and he regained consciousness. The 11-month-old boy, his 11-month-old twin sister and 11-year-old brother were all transported by aid to the hospital for medical evaluations. Both 11-month-old babies tested presumptive positive for fentanyl at the hospital; the 11-year-old boy did not. All three children have since recovered and have been released from the hospital and are now in the custody of Child Protective Services.
During the investigation, Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit (SIU) detectives discovered the children were in the care of their 36-year-old mother and 39-year-old father when the near fatal incident occurred — both parents were living at the South Everett hotel. Detectives served a search warrant on the hotel room and recovered fentanyl and methamphetamine.
Official toxicology reports from the lab are pending and this remains an active investigation.
On Sunday, May 7, an unresponsive 1-year-old baby was brought into Swedish Medical Center in Mill Creek where she was pronounced dead from a suspected fentanyl exposure; and less than a week later, Drug Task Force K-9 Sully was found unresponsive following an early morning on May 11. After administering three doses of Narcan, K-9 Sully began waking up.
At approximately 7:35 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17, Corrections Deputies called a medical emergency at the Snohomish County Jail when seven inmates suffered a fentanyl overdose. An Arlington man was charged with connection to this incident but the case is still being investigated.
